Our Impact

Tour de Cure raises vital funds to support the researchers, surgeons and clinicians who dedicate their lives to finding a cure for cancer.

Tour de Cure was founded in 2007 with the aim of improving Australians health outcomes and to raise $2 million. Since then, together with the Tour de Cure community and partners, we have dreamt up many more ambitious goals

Tour de Cure has raised over $117 million, funded more than 975 cancer research, support and prevention projects, and published 141 cancer breakthroughs.

We are so proud of what we have achieved, but we have so much further to go.

“The support of Tour de Cure has meant that we were able to take what was once a crazy idea and make it a world-first discovery.” - John Kokkinos, PhD Researcher and Tour de Cure Breakthrough Researcher, UNSW

Each year through Signature Tour we are able to raise around $2 million which has the potential to bring about change and hope for the future. Our team hope to increase this goal for our 2024 event.

Access to cancer treatment for people living in rural communities can often mean travel away from home and local support can be limited. That’s why on every tour, Tour de Cure donates $10,000 each night to local cancer support projects which are presented at our community dinners. Discover where each $10k went on Signature Tour 2024.

As part of the Signature Tour team, you will also be part of our ‘Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy’ program, visiting schools along the route. At these sessions, we share how 1 in 3 cancers are preventable, sun safety, and how to improve kids’ nutrition and general wellbeing.

How are Tour de Cure’s funds distributed?

Researchers, scientists, medical and support bodies can apply for funding via our annual grant round. Grants are assessed by our Grants Committee who focus on funding grants that can impact the lives of Australians.

We ensure the research we fund meets the highest possible standards of quality, accountability, transparency and openness. To achieve this, we have implemented an independent peer-review process and established an externally-led Grants Committee.

Our project selection process is backed by esteemed research and clinical organisations, including Translational Research Institute and The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Funds raised during Signature Tour 2024 will go towards the 2024 Annual Grant Round.

What do we fund?

Tour de Cure funds traditional research projects which include:

  • Senior Research Grant – worth up to $200,000

  • Young Research Grant – worth up to $125,000

  • Pioneering Cancer Research Grant – worth up to $80,000

  • Collaborative Grant – worth up to $50,000

  • PhD Grant - worth up to $10,000

We are committed to funding innovation and excellence. We are doing whatever we can to help the science and medical community speed up the ‘bench to bedside’ process and save lives.

Why does research matter?

Research and clinical practice go hand in hand – for every successful cancer treatment, there are countless hours – and often years – of research that have informed the practice and ensured the patient will achieve the best possible outcome. We fund research that:

  • Develops new treatments or drugs

  • Prevents cancer

  • Improves quality of life

  • Improves understanding of different cancers

  • Helps us to understand the emotional and physical support that people need when they are living with cancer

The research we’ve funded has saved the lives of many thousands of people in Australia and all over the world.
